Nava Kailasam or Nava Kailayam means a set of Nine Temples dedicated to Lord Shiva associated with the Navagrahas, the Nine Planets. Nava Kailasam refers to Nine Ancient Savitite Temples of Lord Shiva which are located in and around Tirunelveli. Rishi Uromacha was a disciple of Sage Aasthya, Agasthiyar. Once Uromacha asked His Guru Sage Agasthya about his salvation, moksham. Sage Agasthya gave him nine flowers and asked him to float them in River Tamarabharani, and establish Shivalingas in the places where the flowers land and finally will get salvation in the place where the river meets the sea. Accordingly Uromacha Rishi prayed Shivalingams in the nine places where the flowers docked and finally got salvation in the place where the river merged with the sea.
