Thiruthanka Divyadesam - Deepaprakasa Perumal Temple - Thooppul Vilakkoli Perumal - The History
Once Goddess
Saraswathi had a dispute with lord Bramma Devar and tried to stop the Ashwamedha
Yagam conducted by Him. ( Refer Kanchi Varadhar Divyadesam legend ) in so many
ways but all were went in vain. Finally as advised the demons she made the entire
world to become dull and so dark. Frightened Brahma Devar was not able to continue
his yagna and requested the help from Almighty. Pleased Paranthaman Himself
appeared as a Brightest Flame and provided him the much desired light to preceed the
yagna. Hence HE is being worshipped as Deepa Prakasa Perumal. Deepam means
Light and Prakasa means Luminous Flame. The temple tank is Saraswathy Theertham. Devotees can worship Vedhantha Desigar in a separate shrine where
there are paintings explaining the happenings in his life. Idol of Lakshmi Hayagreevar
worshipped by Desigan personally can be worshipped here in Thiruthanka Divyadesam.
Another legend is that the demons who were not invited for the yagna, approached
Goddess Saraswathi, who was already frustrated and poisoned her mind some more.
They advised her to take an extreme actiond. Goddess Saraswathi sent a
dangerous Asura named Mayanalan in the form of a fire. The big fire height upto the
sky rose in the yaga gundam and everyone got scared. Brahma Devar again appealed
for the help from Paranthaman. The Almighty intercepted the flame and hold it as
Brightest Lamp. Hence He is being worshipped as Deepa Praka Perumal. Goddess
Saraswathi who followed the demon accepted all her mistakes to Sreeman Narayanan
as well Brahma Devar and to apologise She appeared as Sacred Water here.
Hence the tank is being worshipped as Saraswathy Theertham. so as to cool the hot
burning hands of the Almighty. Ka means Lord Brahma and Anjiram means
worshipped. Since Lord Brahma worshipped the Almighty the name Ka Anjiram and
later as Kanchipuram. Once this place was with full of orchards in a cool atmosphere. Than ‐ Cool, Ka ‐ another meaning is Forest. Hence the name Thiruthanka Divyadesam. Moolavar is also being worshipped as Vilakkoli Emperuman in a
Standing Posture Facing West. |
