The Legend for the name - Therazhandur
Legend for the Name Therazhandur - Once there was a King named Uparisaravasu had an amazing boon that he could fly with his chariot to anywhere and what ever comes under the shadow of the chariot would get into trouble. Once the King flew down along with his Queen over Therazhandhur Temple. By that time, the shadow fell down on the Cows and Calves which were grazing over. They all went into the trouble. By knowing this Lord Krishna as Aamaruviappan pressed HIS Right Foot on the Shadow of the Chariot to prevent it from flying further. The chariot fell into the tank. The annoyed King was looking for an assistance and he found a Cow Tending Boy there. He assured the Boy to give 1000 pots of Butter if he could bring back his chariot from the tank. The boy somehow brought back his chariot from the tank. But the king could arrange only for 999 pots of butter and could not able to arrange the remaining one. Withot knowing what to do, He finally filled water in One Pot and gave that to the boy. When the boy opened the pots, there were only one pot with butter and the remaining 999 were with full of water. Astonished king came to know that the boy is none other than the Almighty. He regretted for his mistake and begged to forgive his mistake. At last he got blessed by the Almighty. This is the reason why the Perumal is seen here with HIS Right Foot at a Slighly Lower level than HIS Left Foot. Since the Almighty pressed the shadow of the Chariot to make it fall down here, the place is being called as Therazhandur. Ther means Chariot, Ezhandhu means Lost and Oor means a village.

Garudan in turn presented the Vimanam to Therazhandur Divyadesam and the Ornament to Melkote Thiru Narayanan Temple in Mysore. To thank at this gesture of Periya Thiruvadi. The Almighty accorded Garudalwar a special status by offering him a position alingside HIM in the sanctum sanctorum. This is the special and Unique Feature of Therazhandur Divyadesam, where as in all the temples Garudalwar can be seen only opposite to the Sanctum Sanctorum. Prahaladhan who had seen an arrogant form of Almighty during Narasimha Avatar, underwent a penance and had a dharshan in a calm and softer form as Aamaruviappan in Therazhandur Divyadesam. |
