Vamana Avatar and Sukracharyar
Vamana Avatar and Sukracharyar - While the Emperor Mahabali was donating 3 steps to Lord Vamana, in the guise of a small Brahmin Boy, Shukracharya, Guru of Mahabali identified that the boy was Lord Maha Vishnu and came to destroy the King. He instructed Mahabali not to donate the steps as he promised and also informed that the boy was none other than the Almighty. But Mahabali denied, told his guru that he would be happy if he get killed by the Almighty and started donating. Those days it was a practice that a person will donate by his words along with pouring a holy water from a Kamandalam ( A Small Kettle ) three times. To stop the donation, Sukracharya became a small insect, went into the kettle and blocked the mouth of the kettle. Lord Vishnu understood what happened and plucked a small grass from the land and pierced into the mouth of the Kettle. Being a small insect Skukracharya lost his eye sight and fell down from the kettle. Then the donation was offered and finally Mahabali was destroyed by Lord Vishnu as Vamanan. Later Sukracharya came here to Thiruvelliyangudi, underwent a penance towards Lord Maha Vishnu and got back his eyesight. Hence Thiruvelliyangudi is being worshipped as Sree Vishnava Sukra Dhosha Sthalam. Thiruvelliyangudi is about 20 kms from Kumbakonam on the way to Aaduturai. Another way is to reach via the village called Thirupanandhal.
Kolavilli Raman - Nethra Murthy
Once when Sree Rama was sleeping with His head on the Lap of Sitadevi in Chitrakoodam, Jayandan, son of Indran misbehaved with Sita Devi. He took a form of a Crow and pecked her beacuse of which a drop of her blood fell on Sree Rrama. Angered Rama took a Grass ( Dharbai ), used HIS fingers as a Bow and shot the Grass at the Crow. The Grass started to chase the Crow. At last with no other go, Jayandan, in guise of a Crow surrendered to the feet of Sita Devi and sought for the forgiveness. As Sree Rama used His delicate fingers as a Bow, HE is being worshipped as Kola Villi Raman. ( Kola - Posture, Vil - a Bow ). Sree Periyavachan Pillai - One of the great Vaishnavaite scholars Sri Periyavacchan Pillai was born in Senganur a place close to Thiruvelliyangudi. It is believed that by worshipping Sri Kolavilli Raman here that HE would provide the devotees equivalent to worship Lord Maha Vishnu in All His 108 Divya Desams. As Sukracharya got back his eye sight here, it is believed that still he resides here with the Almighty in the form of Light that burns around the clock, called as Nethra Deepam and here Perumal is also being worshipped as Nethra Murthy. Nethram means Eye. This is the temple where the Almighty preserve the Eye Sight of His devotees.
