Thiru Nilathingal Thundam Divyadesam - Sri Nilathingal Thundathan Temple
Once Goddess
Parvathi closed the eyes of Parameswran just for fun for a moment. His both eyes are
considered to be the Sun and the Moon. Hence the whole world got plunged into the
deep dark. Eswaran got angry. Realized Parvathi wanted atone for the mistake what
she has done and was asked to undergo a penance here at Kanchipuram. She later born
as a child in the name of Kathyayini who was brought up by the rishi
named Kathyaranyar in his Badharikashramam. As she grew up Rishi came to aware the
purpose of her life and asked her to undergo a sincere penance here in Nilathingal
Thundam. Kaathyayini then created a Sivalingam out of Sand underwent a deep
penance by standing up on top of a needle. Eswaran wanted to test her penance and
released Ganges from his Hair. Parvathi noticed that the flood was rushing towards her
and the Sivalingam to interrupt the penance. she requested the help of Lord
Narayanan. Sreeman Narayanan took His Viswaroopa Posture to stop the flood
and at the same time He asked Katyayini to hug the Sivalingam as it was made out of
sand to prevent it from dissolving by water and Parvathi acted accordingly. Eswaran
opened his third eye and the tree under which parvati was doing her penance got
fired. Paranthaman saved her by the cold rays from His eyes and the tree turned back
to its greenish. To save her from the angry of Eswaran and the heat he emitted from His
third eye, it is believed that Paranthaman showered His cold rays to Parvati for some
time. Finally plesaed by the deep devotion of Kathyayini, Lord Shiva gave her His
Darshan and blessed her. As Paranthaman showered His cold rays to Parvathi to cut
down the heat emitted by Eswaran throught his third eye, HE is being worshipped
as Nilathingal Thunathan. Thundatthan means the one who cut. Nila and
Thingal means Moon expressing the coldness of the rays emitted by the
Almighty. Another Legend says that that once when both Asuras and Devas were
churning the Milky Ocean, Lord Mahavishnu was browbeaten by the heat of “Alakala Visham”, the poison came out and the same was consumed by Eswaran to save the
entire universe. At that time the Almighty was pleased by the cold rays as equal as
emitted out of the Full Moon hence HE is being worshipped as Nilathingal Thundathan. |
