MUDIKONDAN SRI KOTHANDA RAMASWAMY TEMPLE - Utthama Lakshana Posture - A 1200 Years old temple, dates back to the period of Ramayana, located 35 KM from Kumbakonam on the way to Thiruvarur, where Sreerama is Blessing with His Unbique Postur - The 3 Bend Posture. Sree Rama's 3 Bend Posture - Utthama Lakshana Kolam

Usually Sree Rama blesses facing South as requested by Vibheeshana, but here in Mudikondan Sree Rama blesses facing East along with Sita and Lakshmana, as a special dharshan to Sage Bharadhwajar. Instead, Lord Ranganathar is blessing facing South. The temple "Sree Rama Theertham" tank is located behind the temple. Hanuman Blessing in a Sanctum Outside of the Temple

An interesting and the very unique fact is that, unlike in other Sree Rama Temples, Hanuman Sanctum Sanctorum is located outside of the temple. The legend is so exciting. When Sree Rama on His march towards Srilanka, He had a stop over here in the hermitage of Sage Bharadwajar for short while. When the sage wanted to treat Sree Rama with a feast. The Almighty politely declined to accept the same as he was on a mission, but promised the sage hat He will come back again on his way back from Lanka to Ayodhya. After defeating the Demon Ravana, when Sree Rama was returning back, He landed here. As the sage requested, Sree Rama was ready to adorn His Crown, event though He was rushing on His way to Ayodhya.

In the meanwhile, Sree Rama told Hanuman to make a quick trip to Ayodhya to inform Bharatha that He was on His way back from Lanka after His 14 years of exile and will reach Ayodhya shortly as promised him earlier. Sage Bharadwajar installed an Idol of Lord Ranganatha as requested by Sree Rama for His routine rituals. After completing His puja, Lord Ranganathar Himself coronated Sree Rama with a "Pushpa Kireedam", a Crown made of five different flowers of Devaloka. Sree Rama blessed the sage with His Crown here in Mudikondan as "Mudi Konda Ramar". Sree Rama with a Crown. Hence the name "Mudikondan". This place is mentioned in "Valmiki Ramayana", where Lord Ranganathar blessed Sree Rama.

An Unique feature here in Mudikondan is, Lord Hanuman sanctum is located outside of the temple, which is very unusual. The legend is also very interesting. Hanuman went to Ayodhya as instructed by Sree Rama, to inform Bharadha that Sree Rama was on His way. By the time Hanuman returned, Sree Rama had adorned the Crown and finished his meals. Saddened by the fact that His Lord did not wait for his return and not having set aside a plantain leaf for him, Hanuman decided to stand outside. Hence, here in Mudikondan, Hanuman sanctum is outside of the temple premise and blesses as "Anjali Hastha Hanuman" with folded Hands praying His Lord. It is also believed that Hanuman in his anger prayed that plantain should not grow here. Even now there plantain trees will not grow here in Mudikondan, and surprisingly there are numerous plantain trees can be found outside of the village.
